I had reached out to with upgrade request day before arrival, they promptly replied I would be upgraded if a unit was available upon check-in - when I got there the front desk noted we had been upgraded before I could ask. As Plat, upgraded from a Studio to a 1bd Suite. Really enjoyed our stay at Koloa Landing. So, an upgrade from lower tier to 1 BR is possible, but 2BR and above won't get upgrades. It seems that bigger villas (2BR/3BR and above) are timeshare properties sold for $$$ to individual owners. That's long way to say you're not going to jeopardize your upgrade chances, because they're nil already.As platinum elite, I got upgraded from studio to 1 BR villa. It's not like a hotel where the operating cost is basically fixed whether you stay in your originally-booked room or in an upgraded room. So were they to do upgrade, the operating company would have to pay real cash money to various owners, which of course they're not going to do. If a unit goes empty, that owner gets no revenue for that night. Each unit is owned by an individual, and you're actually paying them (along with a fee to the operator) to rent their unit for the time you are there. They found out that this is basically a VRBO-like property essentially, there are *never* any upgrades. We booked a 3BR oceanfront villa, and I asked my ambassador to reach out regarding the only possible upgrade, to the 4BR penthouse villa.
